Nearly the Grenville!

This drawing shows what was nearly the Grenville. In 1898 it was proposed to build a hotel on Summerleaze Downs; this was to be a large monolithic hotel of the type seen at Tintagel and Newquay, standing on the cliffs and making a visual statement from a long distance. Luckily for Bude, the status of the downs, as effectively common land for the grazing of stock, led to such an outcry that the plans were dropped and the Grenville was built in its present location instead.
